Omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFA's) are deemed "essential" because:

  • We are born with Omega-3 fatty acids
  • Our bodies continuously use Omega-3 for vital processes
  • Without enough Omega-3, our bodies cannot function properly.
  • Since our bodies cannot reproduce Omega-3 naturally, we must get them through diet or supplementation.

It is important to ensure that your body is receiving enough essential Omega-3 on a daily basis. Many doctors and scientists feel that the decline in human long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids consumption is associated with increased cardiovascular and respiratory problems.

At DPA LifeStyles, we understand that eating multiple servings of fish and other foods rich in long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids every day can be difficult, if not impossible. That is why DPA LifeStyles offers a balanced, pharmaceutical grade source of long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids that exceeds the strictest quality standards in Canada.

Omega-3 News (July 25, 2006)

Fish oil may lead to smart babies - NEWS.com.au, July 20, 2006.

Research by the University of Western Australia and the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research in Perth involved 98 pregnant women recruited from private obstetricians.

To assess the effects of omega 3 PUFA, the pregnant women received either high doses of fish oil or olive oil from 20 weeks gestation until delivery.

At two and a half years of age, 72 children born from the study group - 33 in the fish group and 39 in the control group - were then assessed by a clinical psychologist for growth, development, receptive language and behaviour.

Dr. Dunstan said that the fish oil group attained higher scores in all measures of development, behaviour and language and had a significantly higher score for hand-eye coordination, compared with children from the olive oil control group.

"Improved hand-eye coordination can help in terms of developing fine motor skills that may enhance learning, for example, being able to hold and use a pen or pencil, and increase self-esteem," Dr. Dunstan said.

Dr. Dunstan also said that supplementation of 3.7 grams of omega-3 fatty acids did not result in any adverse effects on mothers or children in the research group.
